Water treatment; emerging contaminants (e.g., per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances); environmental analytical chemistry; porous/pyrogenic carbonaceous materials (black carbon; biochar); nonpoint source pollution control; oilfield produced water.
Dr. Xiao is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the NSF CAREER Award, EPA STAR Early Career Award, ES&T Letters ‘Excellence in Review’ Award, Dean’s Outstanding Faculty Award, and UND Foundation/McDermott Faculty Award for Excellence in Research and/or Creative Activity.
